Introducción. La psitacosis es una enfermedad zoonótica causada por Chlamydia psittaci. Esta bacteria es catalogada como un agente con potencial bioterrorista y ha causado múltiples brotes en trabajadores con exposición laboral a aves en diferentes lugares del mundo. En Colombia, no se hace seguimiento epidemiológico de la infección y existe una gran brecha en el conocimiento. Objetivos. Determinar la frecuencia de anticuerpos contra C. psittaci en trabajadores con exposición laboral a aves y sus factores asociados. Además, revisar la literatura en relación con los estudios sobre el tema realizados en Colombia. Materiales y métodos. Se llevó a cabo un estudio descriptivo, transversal, con intención analítica, en trabajadores en contacto con aves y se revisó la literatura científica relacionada en Colombia. Se detectaron anticuerpos IgM e IgG contra C. psittaci en suero por microinmunofluorescencia. La descripción de las características sociodemográficas y de exposición se hizo con frecuencias y medidas de resumen. Se exploraron factores asociados por análisis bivariados y multivariados. La revisión de la literatura científica y gris se hizo con búsqueda estructurada. Resultados. Se analizaron 54 trabajadores en contacto con aves y se encontró una prevalencia de anticuerpos del 31,5 %. El ejercer funciones de sacrificio y faenado de las aves sin ser médico veterinario fue un factor de riesgo para la presencia de anticuerpos. Solo se encontraron cuatro estudios previos sobre C. psittaci hechos en Colombia. Conclusiones. Este estudio constituye la primera evidencia de la circulación de C. psittaci en trabajadores en contacto con aves en Antioquia y el segundo reporte en el país. Estos hallazgos aportan desde la salud pública a la estrategia One Health.


Introduction. Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, a bacterium classified as an agent with bioterrorist potential. It has caused multiple outbreaks in exposed poultry workers around the world. Colombia has no epidemiological follow-up of the infection and a big knowledge gap. Objectives. To determine the antibodies' frequency against C. psittaci in workers with occupational exposure to birds and to review the literature on studies conducted in Colombia. Materials and methods. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical intent on workers in contact with birds and reviewed the related literature in Colombia. IgM and IgG serum antibodies against C. psittaci were detected by microimmunofluorescence. The sociodemographic and exposure characteristics were expressed as frequencies and summary measures. Associated factors were explored by bivariate and multivariate analysis. The scientific and gray literature review was done with a structured search. Results. We analyzed 54 workers in contact with birds. Antibody prevalence was 31.5%. Slaughtering and evisceration by non-veterinarians was a risk factor for antibody presence. There are only four previous studies on C. psittaci in Colombia. Conclusions. Here, we present the first evidence of C. psittaci circulation among workers exposed to birds in Antioquia and the second report in the country. These findings contribute to the "One Health" public health strategy.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the effects of SINC, a secreted protein of Chlamydia psittaci, on autophagy of host cells and the role of MAPK/ERK signaling pathway in mediating SINC-induced autophagy.@*METHODS@#RAW 264.7 cells treated with recombinant SINC were examined for changes in expression levels of LC3-II, Beclin-1, phosphorylated and total ERK1/2 using Western blotting. The expression level of LC3 in the treated cells was detected using immunofluorescence analysis, and the formation of autophagosomes and autolysosomes was observed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of pretreatment with U0126 (a specific ERK inhibitor) on the expression levels of LC3-II and Beclin-1 in RAW 264.7 cells exposed to different concentrations of SINC was examined using Western blotting, and LC3 puncta in the cells was detected with immunofluorescence analysis.@*RESULTS@#The expression levels of LC3-II and Beclin-1 were the highest in RAW 264.7 cells treated with 2 μg/mL SINC for 12h. Immunofluorescence analysis showed exposure to SINC significantly increased the number of cells containing LC3 puncta, where the presence of autophagosomes and autolysosomes was detected. Exposure to 2 μg/mL SINC for 15 min resulted in the most significant increase of the ratios of p-ERK1/2/ERK1/2 in RAW 264.7 cells. Pretreatment of the cells with U0126 prior to SINC exposure significantly decreased the ratio of p-ERK1/2/ERK1/2, lowered the expression levels of LC3-II and Beclin-1, and decreased LC3 aggregation in the cells.@*CONCLUSIONS@#SINC exposure can induce autophagy in RAW 264.7 cells by activating the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway.

RESUMO

This paper reported a case of severe Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia. The patient had a clear history of contact with sick poultry. The clinical manifestations were dry cough, fever and respiratory failure. Chest CT showed consolidation in the lower lobe of the right lung, and a small amount of exudative ground-glass opacity in the left lung. Chlamydia psittaci was detected in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) by metagenomic assay. After treatment with antibiotics such as nitroimidazoles and carbapenems, the patient was discharged with a better health condition.

In order to determine the presence and genetic diversity of Chlamydia spp. in the north-eastern area of Buenos Aires province, Argentina, conjunctival, oropharyngeal, cloacal swab and tissues were collected from a total of 90 psittacine pet birds of different age and clinical manifestations. Through molecular methods, Chlamydiaceae was detected in 30% (27/90) of the samples, out of which 70.3% (19/27) were positive for Chlamydia psittaci and 14.9% (4/27) for Chlamydia abortus. Nine C. psittaci positive samples were genotyped by ompA gene sequences, 8 clustered within genotype A and 1 within genotype B. A significant association was observed between the presence of Chlamydia spp. and the manifestation of clinical signs compatible with chlamydiosis, as well as with the age of the birds (younger than one year old). This report contributes to the improvement of our understanding of chlamydial agents in our country.


Con el objetivo de determinar la presencia de Chlamydia spp. en psitácidos del área noreste de la provincia de Buenos Aires y conocer su diversidad genética, se recolectaron y analizaron mediante métodos moleculares hisopados conjuntivales, orofaríngeos, cloacales y tejidos de un total de 90 psitácidos de diferentes edades y con diversas manifestaciones clínicas. El 30% (27/90) de las muestras procesadas fueron positivas para Chlamydiaceae; el 70,3% (19/27) de estas resultaron positivas para Chlamydia psittaci y el 14,9% (4/27) para Chlamydia abortus. Nueve muestras positivas para C. psittaci fueron genotipificadas por secuenciación del gen ompA: 8 correspondieron al genotipo Ay una al genotipo B. Se observó una asociación significativa entre la presencia de Chlamydia spp. y la manifestación de signos clínicos compatibles con clamidiosis, como así también con la edad de las aves (menores de un ano). Este informe contribuye a mejorar nuestro conocimiento de los agentes clamidiales en nuestro país.

Polisserosites são alterações inflamatórias das serosas viscerais e parietais das cavidades corpóreas. Um tipo especial destas alterações foi identificado em bubalinos abatidos para consumo nos anos 80, sendo associada a infecção por Chlamydia psittaci. Apesar da importância da bubalinocultura no Pará, do caráter zoonótico da C. psittaci e da possibilidade de envolvimento de outros agentes na afecção, são raros trabalhos sobre a enfermidade desde os estudos pioneiros. No presente trabalho casos identificados como polisserosite pelo serviço de inspeção sanitária em búfalos abatidos para consumo foram coletados com objetivo de determinar a frequência e origem dos mesmos e de caracterizar as lesões e pesquisar antígenos de Chlamydia spp. nas mesmas. De um total de 2.887 bubalinos abatidos no período de estudo foram identificados 48 (1,66%) casos. O município de Santa Cruz do Arari na Ilha de Marajó apresentou a maior porcentagem de casos em relação ao número de animais abatidos (6,49%, 5/77). Na macroscopia as lesões se caracterizaram por áreas opacas, branco-amareladas de espessamento das serosas, por vezes com franjas fibrosas na superfície. Os resultados permitem concluir que os casos classificados como polisserosite pelos veterinários da inspeção sanitária nos búfalos abatidos para consumo correspondem na histopatologia a um tipo incomum de polisserosite, caracterizada por infiltrado linfocitário, com ocasionais formações de folículos linfoides terciários ou ectópicos. Foi observado ainda nestas lesões um predomínio de linfócitos T (CD3 positivos) no infiltrado, sendo os linfócitos B (CD79 positivos) presentes em maior número no interior das estruturas foliculares. Não foram demonstrados antígenos de clamídias nas lesões do presente estudo, o que demonstra a necessidade de estudos adicionais relativos a(s) etiologia(s) das lesões.(AU)


Polyserositis are inflammatory changes of the visceral and parietal serous of body cavities. A special type of polyserositis was identified in buffaloes in the 80s, being associated with infection by Chlamydia psittaci. Since these pioneering studies, there are no additional works about the condition. Considering the importance of buffalo in Pará, the zoonotic character of C. psittaci and the possibility of involvement of other agents in polyserositis in buffaloes the present study is proposed. We collected cases identified as polyserositis by sanitary inspection service in buffalo slaughtered for consumption in Belem for a complementary characterization of inflammatory cell and the research of Chlamydia spp antigens in lesions. Of 2.887 buffaloes slaughtered in a period of six months, there were 48 (1.66%) cases of polyserositis and 39 analyzed. Santa Cruz do Arari in Marajó Island was the city with the highest frequency of cases, whereas 6.49% of buffaloes had lesions. However, 50% of the present study cases came from Soure municipality in Marajó Island, which provided about 49% of buffaloes slaughtered in the period. In the macroscopy, there were opaque areas with white-yellow thickening of the serous, sometimes with fibrous fringes on the surface. Histopathology showed connective tissue projections partially lined by cuboid or flattened mesothelial cells. Often in projections there were mononuclear infiltrate of variable intensity, consisting mainly of lymphoid cells, with occasional ectopic or tertiary lymphoid follicles.(AU)

In Argentina, the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of Chlamydia psittaci infections are still not sufficiently known. A total of 846 respiratory and 10 ocular samples from patients with suspected human psittacosis were tested for C. psittaci from January 2010 to March 2015. Four samples of birds related to these patients were also studied. Forty-eight samples were positive for C. psittaci by a nested PCR. The molecular characterization of twelve C. psittaci PCR-positive samples received in the National Reference Laboratory INEI-ANLIS "Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán", Buenos Aires, Argentina was performed. Eight positive samples from humans and four from birds were genotyped by ompA gene sequencing. C. psittaci genotype A was found in all human samples and in the related birds. This report contributes to our increasing knowledge of the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of C. psittaci to conduct effective surveillance of its zoonotic infections.


En la Argentina, aún no se conocen suficientemente las características epidemiológicas y moleculares de las infecciones por Chlamydia psittaci. Entre enero del 2010 y marzo del 2015 se estudiaron 846 muestras respiratorias y 10 oculares de pacientes con sospecha de psitacosis para la búsqueda de C. psittaci. También se estudiaron 4 muestras de aves relacionadas con estos pacientes. De ese total, 48 muestras fueron positivas para C. psittaci mediante una reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) anidada. Posteriormente, se realizó en el INEI-ANLIS «Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán¼ la caracterización molecular de 12 muestras positivas para C. psittaci, 8 de humanos y 4 de aves, que fueron genotipificadas por secuenciación del gen ompA. C. psittaci genotipo A se encontró en todas esas muestras. Este informe contribuye a mejorar nuestro conocimiento de las características epidemiológicas y moleculares de C. psittaci para lograr una vigilancia efectiva de la zoonosis que produce.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>Chlamydia psittaci is an avian respiratory pathogen and zoonotic agent. The wide prevalence of C. psittaci poses a threat to the poultry industry and its employees. However, few commercial kits are available for detecting avian antibodies excluding the in-house ELISA kit. In this study, we developed a novel ELISA kit for detecting antibodies against C. psittaci based on the N-terminal fragment of polymorphic outer membrane protein D (PmpD-N) as the coating antigen.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The antigen concentrations, primary antibody, and cut-off value were determined and optimized. The ELISA, designated PmpD-N ELISA, was assessed for sensitivity, specificity, and concordance using sera samples from 48 experimentally infected and 168 uninfected SPF chickens.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The sensitivity and specificity of PmpD-N ELISA were 97.9%, 100%, respectively, while the concordance was 98.1% as compared to that of MOMP-ELISA. No cross-reaction with positive sera for other avian pathogens was found. Using PmpD-N ELISA, 799/836 clinical samples were positive, including 93.0% and 98.1% positivity in layers and broilers, respectively.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>These data indicate that indirect ELISA with PmpD-N as the antigen candidate is a promising approach for the surveillance of C. psittaci infection.</p>

ntroducción: Las infecciones zoonóticas son una creciente amenaza para la salud mundial. Varias especies de Chlamydia y sus implicancias son poco conocidas. Objetivo: Profundizar el conocimiento eco-epidemiológico de Chla-mydia en Córdoba.Materiales y métodos: Se implementaron técnicas serológicas y mo-leculares para la detección de Chlamydia en 314 individuos sanos, 44 con nexo epidemiológico asociado a Psitacosis, 505 aves silvestres, 288 aves cautivas, 30 reptiles y 30 equinos. Resultados: En humanos se detectó C. pneumoniae, C. pecorum, C. psittaci, y co-infecciones asociadas a mayor cuantificación bac-teriana. La prevalencia de anticuerpos en indivi-duos sanos fue de 14,3 % y en pacientes 68,2 %. Se evidenció una respuesta inmune exacerbada en trabajadores en contacto con reptiles infectados con C. pneumoniae. En aves cautivas se identificó C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci, C. pecorum, C. galliná-cea y co-infecciones con mayor concentración de ADN. Las aves silvestres no excretaban Chlamydia. En equinos se halló C. pneumoniae, también en Su-ricata suricatta y Atelerix albiventris. El genotipo A se halló en humanos, reptiles, aves, mamíferos no humanos y B en equinos. Conclusiones: C. psittaci genotipo WC se detectó en aves y humanos; en menor frecuencia los genotipos E/B y A. Este hallazgo sugiere que los animales pueden representar una fuente subestimada de C. psittaci. El hallazgo de C. pneumoniae y C. pecorum en pacientes y en animales, plantea posibles ciclos zoonóticos y la necesidad de diagnóstico diferencial. Estos resultados avalaron el decreto de ley provincial de tenencia y comercialización de animales, promovido por la Secretaría de Am-biente de Córdoba


Introduction: Zoonotic infections are a growing threat to global health. Chlamydia and its implications are not well known.The aim of this study was to further the eco-epidemiological knowledge of Chlamydia in Cordoba.Materials and methods: Serological and molecular techniques was implemented for detection of Chlamydia in 314 healthy individuals, 44 individuals associated with Psittacosis, 505 wild birds, 288 captive birds, 30 reptiles and 30 equine.Results: In humans were detected C. pneumoniae, C. pecorum, C. psittaci and co-infections associated with increased bacterial quantification.The prevalence of antibodies in healthy individuals was 14.3% and 68.2% patients. Exacerbated immune response was detected in workers with contact infected with C. pneumoniae evidenced reptiles.In captive birds we detected C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci, C. pecorum, C. gallinácea and co-infections with the highest concentration of DNA. Wild birds did not excrete Chlamydia.In horses we found C. pneumoniae, also in Suricata suricatta and Atelerix albiventris. The genotype was found in humans, reptiles, birds, mammals and non-human equine B.Conclusions: C. psittaci WC genotype was detected in birds and humans; less frequently genotypes E/B and A. This finding suggests that animals can be a source of C. psittaci underestimated.The discovery of C. pneumoniae and C. pecorum in patients and animals raises potential zoonotic cycles and the need for differential diagnosis.These results endorsed the decree of provincial law to possess and marketing of animals, promoted by Secretaría de Ambiente de Córdoba

A existência de populações numerosas de pombos (Columba livia) em centros urbanos, em quase todo o mundo, tem se tornado um risco à saúde pública em vista das zoonoses que podem transmitir. A infecção por Chlamydophila psittaci foi avaliada em pombos que frequentam áreas públicas, como praças, ruas e pontos turísticos na cidade de Salvador, Bahia, por meio da PCR em amostras de fezes frescas, suabes cloacais e orofaríngeos. O estudo revelou uma frequência de infecção por C. psittaci de 11,7% (16/137) dos pombos, e oito dos 10 locais pesquisados apresentavam aves infectadas. A detecção de C. psittaci em amostras de cloaca e orofaringe foi maior (15,8% - 3/19) que em amostras de fezes frescas (11% - 13/118). Os resultados demonstram a ocorrência de infecção por C. psittaci em pombos que habitam as áreas públicas da cidade de Salvador e apontam para a necessária elaboração de medidas de controle e monitoramento das populações de pombos urbanos, bem como de ações voltadas à conscientização da sociedade sobre os riscos à saúde pública.


The existence of numerous pigeon (Columba livia) populations in urban centers, in most of the world, has become a public-health risk given the zoonoses they can transmit. Infection with Chlamydophila psittaci was evaluated in pigeons that frequent public areas, such as squares, streets and tourist sites in the city of Salvador, through PCR from fresh feces samples, cloacal swabs and oropharyngeals. The study revealed a frequency of infection with C. psittaci of 11.7% (16/137) in pigeons, and infected birds were found in eight of the ten locales researched. The detection of C. psittaci in samples of cloaca and oropharyngs was greater (15.8% - 3/19) than in the samples of fresh feces (11% - 13/118). The results show the occurrence of infection with C. psittaciem in pigeons that live in public areas in the city of Salvador and points to the necessity of elaborating control and monitoring measures for the populations of urban pigeons as well as developing actions that will raise society´s awareness of these risks to public health.

Las infecciones zoonóticas son una creciente amenaza para la salud mundial. Las neumonías atípicas son causadas frecuentemente por patógenos zoonóticos como por ejemplo Chlamydia; sin embargo, varias de estas especies bacterianas y sus implicancias son aún poco conocidas. El objetivo del estudio fue profundizar en el conocimiento eco-epidemiológico de las especies de Chlamydia de importancia médico-veterinaria presentes en la provincia de Córdoba, Argentina. Para tal fin, se implementaron técnicas serológicas y moleculares para la detección, cuantificación y caracterización genética de Chlamydia en un amplio rango de muestras humanas [individuos sanos (n=314), individuos con nexo epidemiológico asociado a psitacosis (n=44) y animales [aves silvestres (n=505), aves en cautiverio (n=288), reptiles (n=30), equinos (n=30)]. La especie de Chlamydia más frecuentemente detectada en humanos fue C. pneumoniae, seguida de C. pecorum y C. psittaci. También se detectaron co-infecciones. Este hallazgo no pudo asociarse al sexo, edad, cuadros clínicos específicos, patrón estacional, ni especie aviar de contacto. Sin embargo, la neumonía atípica fue el cuadro clínico más fuertemente asociado al hallazgo de estos agentes y las infecciones mixtas estuvieron asociadas a mayor cuantificación bacteriana y a una exacerbación del cuadro clínico, llevando a la hospitalización de los pacientes, quienes requirieron cuidados intensivos.


SUMMARY: Zoonotic infections are a growing threat to global health. Atypical pneumonias are often caused by zoonotic pathogens such as Chlamydia. However; very little is known about chlamydial infections and their implications in our region The aim of this study was to enhance the eco-epidemiological knowledge of Chlamydia species in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. Serological and molecular techniques were implemented for the detection, quantification and genetic characterization of Chlamydia from a wide range of human samples [healthy individuals (n = 314) and individuals with suspected human psittacosis (n = 44) as well as animal samples [wild birds (n = 505), captive birds (n = 288), reptiles (n = 30), horses (n = 30)]. C. pneumoniae was the most frequently detected species in humans, followed by C. psittaci and C. pecorum. Co-infections were also detected. We did not find associated with sex, age, specific clinical conditions, seasonal pattern, or avian contact. However, atypical pneumonia was the main clinical manifestation associated with these agents. Mixed infections were associated with increased DNA quantification and an exacerbation of clinical symptoms, leading to hospitalization of patients who required intensive care.

A clamidiose é causada por Chlamydophila psittaci e representa uma das principais zoonoses de origem aviária. Realizou-se um estudo retrospectivo em psitacídeos do período de 1995 a 2012 e exame imuno-histoquímico (IHQ) anti-Chlamydia. Foram avaliados 111 casos, dos quais 12 foram a óbito devido à clamidiose. As aves eram provenientes de apreensão ou cativeiro (zoológicos, criatórios, centros de triagem e domicílios). À necropsia observou-se fígado aumentado (4/12) com áreas branco-amareladas (3/12), baço aumentado (2/12) e rompido (1/12), saco pericárdico com deposição de fibrina (1/12), polisserosite fibrinosa (1/12) e em três casos não havia lesões. Na avaliação histopatológica evidenciou-se hepatite necrótica mononuclear (7/12), hepatite mononuclear (3/12), hiperplasia de ductos biliares (8/12), esplenite necrótica histiocitária (9/12), hemossiderose em fígado (9/12) e baço (9/12), aerossaculite mononuclear (4/12), pericardite fibrino-heterofílica (2/12), necrose (1/12) e rarefação (1/12) linfoide de bursa de Fabricius, pneumonia fibrinosa (1/12), nefrite mononuclear (1/12) e granulomas renais (1/12). Observaram-se inclusões basofílicas intracitoplasmáticas (corpos elementares) em fígado (2/12), baço e rins (1/12). Evidenciou-se imunomarcação anti-Chlamydia em fígado (11/12), baço (7/9), pulmões (3/9), rins (2/8), intestinos (2/3), sacos aéreos (1/4) e bursa de Fabricius (1/2). A IHQ poderá ser utilizada como forma de diagnóstico definitivo post mortem de clamidiose em psitacídeos no Brasil...


Chlamydiosis is caused by Chlamydophila psittaci and is one of the most important avian zoonosis. A retrospective study in psittacines was performed from 1995 to 2012 with immunohistochemistry (IHC) anti-Chlamydia. Hundred eleven cases were evaluated and twelve birds died due to chlamydiosis. The birds were obtained from illegal commerce traffic or captive conditions (zoos, breeding birds, wildlife rehabilitation center and pets). Grossly, there were hepatomegaly (4/12) with yellowish-white areas (3/12), splenomegaly (2/12), splenic rupture (1/12), fibrin deposition in pericardial sac (1/12), fibrinous polyserositis (1/12), and in three cases lesion was not found. Histopathological evaluation revealed mononuclear necrotizing hepatitis (7/12), mononuclear hepatitis (3/12), biliary duct hyperplasia (8/12), histiocytic necrotizing splenitis (9/12), hemosiderosis in liver (9/12) and spleen (9/12), mononuclear aerosaculitis (4/12), fibrin heterophilic pericarditis (2/12), lymphoid necrosis (1/12) and depletion of bursa Fabricius (1/12), fibrinous pneumonia (1/12), mononuclear nephritis (1/12), and renal granulomas (1/12). Basophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions (elementary bodies) were observed in liver (2/12), spleen and kidney (1/12). Positive immunostaining for Chlamydia could be detected in liver (11/12), spleen (7/9), lung (3/9), kidney (2/8), intestines (2/3), air sacs (1/4) and bursa of Fabricius (1/2). It was concluded that IHC can be used as postmortem definitive diagnosis of chlamydiosis in psittacines...

RESUMO

Avian chlamydiosis is caused by Chlamydophila psittaci and considered as one of an important zoonotic disease throughout the world. Among more than 400 avian species including poultry and pet birds susceptible to the disease, psittacine birds were known to be mostly susceptible hosts. In Korea, no outbreak of the disease and genetic analysis of the agent in poultry and pet birds have been reported. With histopathological findings and genetic identification of a causative agent, avian chlamydiosis was identified in parrots submitted from the same pet bird farm in 2006 and 2009 for the diagnosis. Based on genetic sequences and phylogenetic analysis of ompA gene, the two isolates of Chlamydophila psittaci showed 100% of genetic similarity and belonged to genotype A, suggesting that the same agent might be continuously circulated in the farm. This result indicates that serological survey of the disease in pet bird farms and impact of the disease on significance in public health may be further studied.

Objetivo Establecer la seroprevalencia de Chlamydophila psittaci en aves del género Amazona spp y en trabajadores de algunos zoológicos y CAV (centros de atención y valoración de fauna silvestre). Metodología Se analizaron 138 sueros de aves del género Amazona spp, 24 sueros de otras especies de aves y 39 sueros humanos por ELISA indirecta. Se utilizó el antígeno RMOMP (major outer membrane protein of Chlamydophila psittaci). Para el conjugado de aves se utilizo una anti-IgG de turkey-chicken marcado con biotina para el conjugado humano se utilizo una anti-IgG marcada con peroxidasa. Los sueros fueron diluidos 1:100. Resultados De los 138 sueros de aves del género Amazona spp 118 (85 por ciento) resultaron positivos. La seroprevalencia por región fue la siguiente: CAV Torre cuatro de Caldas 36 (90 por ciento), Zoológico de Barranquilla 14 (87 por ciento), CAV Montería 28 (85 por ciento), Zoológico de Cali 21 (84 por ciento) y CAV Victoria del Oriente Caldense 19 (79 por ciento). En humanos la seroprevalencia total fue del 78 por ciento (30/39) la distribución fue la siguiente: CAV Montería 9 trabajadores (100 por ciento), Zoológico de Barranquilla 9 (90 por ciento), CAV Torre 4 de Caldas 4 trabajadores (80 por ciento), CAV Victoria del Oriente Caldense 3 (75 por ciento) y 5 (45 por ciento) trabajadores del Zoológico de Cali. Conclusiones La alta seroprevalencia de Chlamydophila psittaci en aves (86,4 por ciento) y humanos (78 por ciento) representa la primera evidencia de la circulación de este microorganismo en Colombia, la presencia del agente etiologico de la ornitosis podría representar un riesgo de salud publica.


Objective To establish the seroprevalence of Chlamydophila psittaci in birds of Amazona spp genus and workers from some zoos and CAVs (centers for attention and evaluation of wildlife) of Colombia. Methods We analyzed 138 sera from birds of the genus Amazona spp, 24 sera from other species of birds and 39 human sera by indirect ELISA. Regarding seroprevalence in humans, 30 of the 39 (78 percent) were seropositive, regional seroprevalence was as follow: Montería 9 (100 percent) workers, Barranquillaâs Zoo 9 (90 percent), CAV Caldas Tower four 4 (80 percent), Caliâs Zoo 5 (45 percent) and CAV Caldense Victoria del oriente 3 (75 percent) were seropositive. Conclusions The high seroprevalence of Chlamydophila psittaci in birds (86,4 percent) and humans (78 percent) showed the first evidence of circulation of this microorganism in Colombia; the circulation of the etiological agent of psittacosis may represent a public health risk.

PURPOSE: Only a few cases of keratoconjunctivitis caused by Chlamydophila psittaci have been reported worldwide, and no case reported in Korea. We report an atypical case of keratoconjunctivitis caused by Chlamydophila psittaci. CASE SUMMARY: A 34-year-old male patient who had raised a parrot at home presented with three weeks of conjunctival injection and a week of ocular pain in his left eye. There were papillae on the left upper and lower tarsal conjunctiva and punctuate epithelial erosion of the entire cornea. He also complained of dizziness, fever, and dyspnea. Upon chest X-ray, consolidation on the right middle lobe was apparent. The Chlamydophila IgM antibody test was positive, and the pneumonia improved quickly. Nevertheless, signs of keratoconjunctivitis persisted despite 3-week treatment with oral doxycycline. As a result, the patient received an additional 10-day treatment with oral azithromycin. Four weeks after the first visit, symptoms were improving gradually, and, after six weeks, no signs of keratoconjunctivitis remained except minimal erosion. CONCLUSIONS: When patients show keratoconjunctivitis after contact with a bird, prolonged ketatoconjunctivitis by Chlamydophila psittaci should be considered.

Objective This study was aimed at investigating the frequency of infection by Cp. psittaci and determining its genotype in individuals at potential risk of exposure to the bacteria. Methodology The study involved 170 individuals: a risk group (n= 96) and a low-risk control group (n=74). Cp. psittaci was detected and genotyped by single-tube nested PCR and ompA gene sequencing. Results Eight (8.3 %) positive cases were detected in the risk group and 1 (1.4 %) in the control group (p<0.04). Cp. psittaci was found in 16.7 % of pigeons' fecal samples. Cp. psittaci infection with was more frequent in symptomatic (17.7 %) than asymptomatic (6.3 %) individuals in the risk group. Analysing the genomes isolated from human and bird specimens revealed the presence of genotype B. Conclusion The presence of Cp. psittaci genotype B in the population being evaluated could have been attributed to zoonotic transmission from pigeons to humans, an underestimated potential public health problem in Venezuela requiring the health authorities' involvement.


Objetivo El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la frecuencia de infecciones por Cp. psittaci y determinar su genotipo en individuos con potencial riesgo de exposición a la bacteria. Metodología Se incluyeron 170 individuos, un grupo de riesgo (n=96) y un grupo control (n=74). La detección y genotipificación de Cp. psittaci se llevó a cabo por PCR anidada y secuenciación del gen ompA. Resultados Se detectaron ocho (8,3 %) casos positivos en el grupo de riesgo y 1 (1,35 %) en el grupo control (p<0,04). Cp. psittaci fue detectada en 16,7 % muestras fecales de palomas. En el grupo de riesgo, la frecuencia de infección por Cp. psittaci fue 17,7 % en individuos sintomáticos y 6,3% en asintomáticos. El análisis de los genomas aislados de muestras humanas y aves, revelaron la presencia del genotipo B. Conclusión La presencia de Cp. psittaci genotipo B en la población evaluada podría ser atribuida a transmisión zoonótica de palomas a humanos, un potencial problema de salud pública en nuestra región que requiere la intervención de autoridades sanitarias.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the role of pathogenic microorganisms commonly associated with chronic eye disease, including Chlamydia psittaci, Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2, and adenovirus type 8 and type 19, in the development of primary ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in Chinese patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty-eight archival cases of primary ocular adnexal lymphoproliferative lesions, including 38 cases of MALT lymphoma, 3 cases of non-MALT lymphoma and 27 cases of chronic inflammation, were enrolled into the study. DNA was extracted from the paraffin-embedded tissue samples. The presence of DNA of C. psittaci, C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, HSV type 1, HSV type 2, adenovirus type 8 and adenovirus type 19 were analyzed by multiplex touchdown enzyme time-release polymerase chain reaction (TETR-PCR).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All of the specimens yielded PCR products of over 100 base pairs and were thus suitable for TETR-PCR screening of infectious agents. The prevalence of DNA of C. psittaci, C. trachomatis and adenovirus type 19 were 0 in MALT lymphoma, non-MALT lymphoma and chronic inflammation. There were 2 cases positive for C. pneumoniae DNA, amongst the 38 cases of MALT lymphoma studied (5.3%, 2/38). HSV type 1, HSV type 2 and adenovirus type 8 DNA was found in each of the 3 patients with chronic inflammation.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The study indicates that C. psittaci, C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, HSV type 1, HSV type 2, adenovirus type 8 and adenovirus type 19 probably play little role in the pathogenesis of ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma in Chinese patients.</p>

Introducción: En las últimas décadas, se ha detectado un aumento de las poblaciones de palomas (Columba livia) y un mayor contacto con personas sanas e inmunocomprometidas. Objetivos: detectar algunos agentes zoonóticos en la paloma doméstica (Columba livia) en la ciudad de Chillán. Materiales y Métodos: Desde octubre de 2002 hasta septiembre de 2003 fueron capturadas 100 palomas. Se tomaron muestras de sangre, órganos y contenido intestinal de cada una de ellas, para ser cultivadas en diferentes tipos de agar, de acuerdo al microorganismo buscado. La identificación de hongos se efectuó mediante estudio de morfología con azul de metileno al 2%. Para la detección de Chlamydophila psittaci se realizó un examen serológico utilizando un kit comercial de ELISA (IDEXX). Resultados: se registraron palomas positivas frente a: clamidiosis (11%), estafilococcosis (8%), salmonelosis (4%) y aspergilosis (1%). No se detectaron palomas con evidencias de criptococcosis y listeriosis. Conclusiones: La paloma doméstica de la ciudad de Chillán actúa como portador de agentes zoonóticos de importancia en salud pública.


Introduction: There is an increase in the population of doves (Columba livia) as well as their contact with healthy and immunocompromised hosts. Objectives: detection of some zoonotic agents of the domestic pigeon (Columba livia) in Chillán city, Chile. Materials and Methods: From October 2002 to September 2003, 100 domestic pigeons were captured. Blood, organs and intestine contents were sampled from each pigeon. The samples were cultivated in different kinds of agar according to the searched microorganism. Fungi were typified by morphological studies after staining with 2% methilene blue. For the detection of Chlamydophila psittaci a commercial Elisa kit (IDEXX) was used. Results: Pigeons were registered positive for: clamidiosis (11%), staphylococosis (8%), salmonellosis (4%) and aspergillosis (1%). No pigeon had evidence of cryptococosis and listeriosis. Conclusions: these results confirm that domestic pigeon could act as vector of zoonotic agents of public health importance.

OBJETIVO: Determinar si los anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila pneumoniae en pacientes con infarto agudo del miocardio y factores de riesgo coronario se asocian con la muerte. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se hizo un estudio observacional, prospectivo, transversal y comparativo. Se incluyeron en el estudio 100 sujetos que, entre 1999 y 2000, estuvieron hospitalizados en la Unidad Coronaria del Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico La Raza, del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Se trataba de una muestra constituida por pacientes de ambos sexos, mayores de 18 años, con infarto agudo del miocardio y riesgo coronario. Mediante microinmunofluorescencia indirecta se identificaron anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Chlamydophila psitacii y Chlamydia trachomatis. De entre los 100 sujetos, se eligieron al azar 33, a quienes se les determinaron anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila, no sólo durante su estancia en el hospital, sino también al salir de éste y a los tres meses de haber sufrido el infarto agudo del miocardio. Se calcularon las medias y las desviaciones geométricas estándares para los títulos de anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila, y se determinó la razón de momios y el intervalo de confianza al 95 por ciento entre los factores de riesgo coronario y la muerte. RESULTADOS: Setenta por ciento de los pacientes de la muestra inicial presentaron anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila pneumoniae; no se identificaron anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila psitacii y Chlamydia trachomatis. No se observó una fuerza de asociación estadísticamente significativa con la muerte en pacientes con infarto agudo del miocardio y factores de riesgo coronario. De los 33 individuos de la submuestra, 25 presentaron anticuerpos contra Chlamydophila pneumoniae, y en 83 por ciento de estos últimos casos, se registró un descenso de dichos anticuerpos a los tres meses de haberse presentado el infarto agudo del miocardio. CONCLUSIONES: A pesar de que en pacientes con infarto agudo del miocardio y riesgo coronario se presentó un incremento en la frecuencia de seropositividad a Chlamydophila pneumoniae, no se observó una fuerza de asociación estadísticamente significativa de ello con la muerte.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence linking infection with Chlamydophila pneumoniae with vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. However, the data remain inconclusive and the clinical importance of C. pneumoniae as vasculopathic is unclear. So, we intend to detect C. pneumoniae in acute myocardial infarction patients by microimmunofluorescence (mIF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). METHODS: Blood and peripheral mononuclear cells (PMNCs) of 24 myocardial infarction patients and 100 normal controls were collected. Serum were used in mIF and PMNCs in PCR. PMNC sample were tested for C. pneumoniae by 'touchdown 'nested PCR. The first round PCR amplified DNA from both C. pneumoniae and Chlamydophila psittaci, while the second round specially targeted C. pneumoniae allowing the two species to be differentiated. RESULTS: Seropositivity of IgG and IgM anti-Chlamydophila pneumoniae antibody titers were 95.8% and 25% in myocardial infarction patients and 61% and 16% in control group, respectively. Positive rates of PCR of PMNCs were 8.3% in the patients and 15% in control group. CONCLUSION: The results of mIF show that mIF positive rate in myocardial infarction was much higher than control group. So an association between C. pneumoniae and myocardial infarction can be concluded. But the opposite results of PCR of PMNCs needed further studies.
